WE NEED TO CREATE A "POSITIVE ADDICTION" TO DAILY BIBLE READING

A. WHAT IS A "POSITIVE ADDICTION"?

A positive addiction is a habit which is:
1) Good for you, either physically, mentally, or spiritually
2) A source of pleasure and satisfaction
3) One that should you neglect it, begins to give you "withdrawal pains"

B. WHY IS A "POSITIVE ADDICTION" TO DAILY BIBLE READING NECESSARY?

1. It will help you maintain the practice of reading the Bible
2. Should a few days go by without reading the Bible, the "discomfort" experienced will help motivate you to get "back on track"
3. Most people who have tried to read the Bible daily and did not keep it up...
a. Are people who have never experienced a positive addiction to reading God's Word
b. Rather than a pleasurable experience, it was a chore
c. So when they fell behind in their goals, there was little motivation to catch up

[Having explained what I mean by "positive addiction", here are some thoughts on...]

II. HOW TO CREATE A "POSITIVE ADDICTION" FOR DAILY BIBLE READING

A. THE PRINCIPLES ARE THE SAME FOR CREATING ANY POSITIVE ADDICTION...
1. You must make the experience a pleasurable one
a. This is where many people fail when it comes to "exercise"
b. Going about it the wrong way, the daily workouts are painful and miserable
c. Therefore any excuse not to exercise prevents them from keeping it up
2. The same applies to reading the Bible
a. To many, they try to do too much too soon
b. The experience soon becomes little more than "marking a checklist"

 B. SOME SUGGESTIONS...
1. START SLOW, WITH SMALL GOALS
a. Many try to start by reading through the Bible in one year
1) An admirable goal, but most never make it past Exodus or Leviticus
2) Before Bible reading has become a positive addiction, they run into difficult passages of Scripture
3) They are like beginning joggers who try to run a mile the first time out
b. I would recommend starting with making the New Testament a yearly goal
1) This requires no more than a chapter a day
2) The material is easier, more edifying at the outset
c. Once you have read the New Testament in a year a couple of times
1) You might read through the Old Testament one year
2) Then begin reading through the entire Bible each year
2. BEGIN EACH SESSION WITH PRAYER
a. Like that found in Ps 119:18: "Open my eyes, that I may see wondrous things from Your Law."
b. This puts us in the most receptive frame of mind - James 1:21
3. READ SLOWLY, CAREFULLY
a. This helps to prevent reading without comprehending what you read - Ps 1:1-2; 119:15-16
b. Reading out loud at times, as though you were reading to someone else, can help to read this way
4. MAKE USE OF BIBLE STUDY AIDS
a. Especially a Bible dictionary, and Bible maps
b. Don't observe the "pass over", passing over...
1) Words you don't understand
2) Names you don't know
3) Places unfamiliar to you
c. Every time you do, there is that much more of the Bible you
don't understand, don't get anything out of it
d. Take a moment to look them up in the references
5. DISCUSS WHAT YOU READ WITH OTHERS
a. Encourage others to follow the same program of reading
b. Share your discoveries, the passages that encourage you
6. READ WITH THE INTENTION TO DO WHAT IT SAYS
a. Otherwise, you are wasting your time! - Ja 1:22-24
b. The true joy comes in the application of God's Word (another "positive addiction" to develop) - Ja 1:25
7. END EACH SESSION WITH PRAYER
a. Like that expressed in Ps 119:5-6
b. Or the one found in Ps 119:10-11

I have found that following these suggestions the practice of reading the Bible becomes one of great joy. - Ps 119:162
Done on a regular basis, a "positive addiction" for daily Bible reading quickly develops which helps you to keep up this wonderful habit.

I hope that in some way I have encouraged everyone...
a. To begin if they have never done so
b. To continue if they are doing so
c. To try again if they tried in the past and failed
For there is so much to gain, and there is so much to lose!

Here are some scriptures for the next seven days that we can commit to reading together. Please hit the comment bottom at the end of this article and tell how God might be speaking to you. One way that God uses to sow scripture into our hearts is when we speak it out. Share what God is teaching you and another person may share something that brings a better understanding.

Day One - Acts 2:1-4,42-47
Day Two - Acts 4:8-15, 27-30
Day Three - Acts 6:1-7
Day Four - Acts 11:19-26
Day Five - Acts 13:1-5
Day Six - Acts 16:1-5
Day Seven - Acts 16:6-15

When You Don’t See God’s Hand

“But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself” Daniel 1:8

Is there really a God? Is He loving? Is He good? Is there a God I can turn to and trust? Am I crazy to believe “yes” to all these things?

When things are going fine in your life, you might not find it hard to believe in a God that is good and who loves you, but if something devastating has recently happened that makes you ask, “How could a loving God allow this?” Then you will understand Daniel’s story.

If you need some perspective and hope in your circumstances today, then you need to turn the channel and watch a couple scenes from Daniel’s life. Across all the pages of Scripture that detail his story from teenager to old man, you can write “Sovereignty at Work.” God was directing Daniel’s life—get this—whether Daniel saw it at the time or not.

So now you know where we’re going. Let me give you some context before we travel too far. Way back when He rescued His people from Egypt, God made it clear. “If you guys live the way I tell you to live and obey My commands, you’re gonna get blessed. But if you turn your back on Me and follow other gods, you’re gonna be in for a world of hurt.” Sadly, most people chose the latter and God allowed His own people to be judged. That’s what was happening when Daniel was a teenager. One bright day in Jerusalem, Daniel was captured in his enemy’s net and his world turned upside down.

But Daniel’s captors were working a strategy. They singled out the best, young people—the All -American teenagers with the highest SAT scores and the ones voted MVP and Most Likely to Succeed (Daniel included)—and brought them to their capital city near modern-day Kuwait. They said, “We’re gonna brainwash these kids and teach them to lead our program.” So Daniel was given a foreign name, Belteshazzar, and was forced to learn a new language and culture. They even got a new diet.

Here’s where the story turns. Daniel 1:8 says, “But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s meat.”

“But Daniel.” (I love the “buts” in the Bible.) Just when things were headed downhill, God found a person who would stand for Him. Daniel said, “My world just got rocked, but I’m all for God—I won’t do that thing that would dishonor Him.” (Read Daniel to understand why eating the king’s meat was such a big deal.)

Had Daniel decided what God was like by looking at his circumstances, he would have become a disillusioned, confused, angry young man. Ripped from his homeland, forced into slavery, most likely castrated to become a eunuch in the palace, Daniel still had his eyes on God. Don’t gloss over this like it’s some made-for-TV movie—this story is true in every detail. Imagine the suffering connected with his circumstances. Yet Daniel went through the fire . . . successfully. And you can too.

40-Day Spiritual Devotion

In the Shadow of His Greatness

As the Lenten season continues to move forward, we should remind ourselves of God’s Greatness and remember that it is “to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us,” NKJV Eph 3:20-21 that His greatness is seen in us. But more importantly He is worthy of our praise.

The Compass is working on having an amazing history. If there was or is any goodness to be seen in the ministry of this church, (and I believe there is) it is only in the shadow of His Greatness. In the Old & New Testament we see His greatness in the lives He empowered and we are challenged and called into that greatness.

I want to invite you to continue your 40-day journey with me this Lenten Season to see what God will do. Moses spent 40 days with God and got the Ten Commandments, Twelve men took 40 days to explore Canaan and found the provision of God, Elijah traveled 40 days to meet with God and was refreshed, and Jesus fasted 40 days and 40 nights before He began His ministry and we all are the result of that ministry!

What will happen to us in this 40-day Devotion is for us to find out. But God is already eagerly waiting to spend time with each of us.

Remember we will end our journey together on April12th in worship. We will have a testimony time to celebrate all that God has done in us and through us. This is an important time in the life of The Compass. God is already at work.
Pastor Terrance☺

Prayer & Fasting

Jesus both taught and modeled fasting. After being anointed by the Holy Spirit, He was led into the wilderness to fast and pray for 40 days (Matthew 4:2). During the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus gave specific instructions on how to fast (Matthew 6:16-18). Jesus knew the followers He addressed would fast. But what is the purpose of fasting in the life of the believer today? Here are some answers.

Showing Humility and Repentance

One reason we fast is to demonstrate humility before the sovereign Creator of the universe. God responds when we diligently and wholeheartedly seek Him (2 Chronicles 7:14).
Sometimes this involves confession and repentance from sin. This was the case of the Ninevites when Jonah reluctantly told them God was going to bring judgment upon them (Jonah 3:5,10), 50 they called a fast and repented of their sin. Fasting demonstrates humility by acknowledging our dependence on God. In Psalm 35, David laments his enemies' harsh treatment of him in contrast to how he cared for them when they were ill. He humbled his soul by fasting and praying for their recovery (Psalm 35:13).

Seeking God's Face More Fully

A second reason we fast is to respond to God's love toward us. It is as if we are saying to God, "Because You are righteous and holy, and loved me enough to send Jesus to die for my sins, I want to get to know You more intimately."
Jeremiah 29:13 says we will find God when we seek Him with all our hearts. We may want to take extra time to seek and praise God by missing a meal or abstaining from food for a day or more.
When we deliberately set aside time for fasting, we are showing we want to seek God.

Asking for Something You Desire

Sometimes we fast to demonstrate our sincerity to God concerning something we truly desire. Ezra proclaimed a fast to ask God to protect His people as they journeyed to Jerusalem from exile. God responded by leading them safely to Jerusalem, delivering them from their enemies and ambushes along the way (Ezra 8:21 31).
Although fasting may show our sincerity, it does not guarantee we will receive what we desire. Maybe our request is not within God's will, or we may be asking with the wrong motives. David fasted for seven days when God struck with illness the child Bathsheba conceived by David. David repented of his adultery with Bathsheba and the murder of her husband. He humbled himself, fasted and prayed, but the child still died (2 Samuel 12:15-18).
Through fasting we can determine the sincerity and correctness of our requests.

Fasting to Know God's Will

Seeking God's will or direction is different from petitioning Him for something we desire. When the Israelites were in conflict with the tribe of Benjamin, they sought God's will through fasting. The entire army fasted until evening, and "the men of Israel asked the Lord, 'Shall we go out again and fight against our brother Benjamin, or shall we stop?"' (Judges 20:26-28).
Acts 13:1-3 implies that church leaders were seeking God's direction for their ministry through prayer and fasting. The Holy Spirit responded by saying, "Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them." In both instances, people fasted and prayed to determine God's will.

What Does it Accomplish?

Spending time in prayer and fasting is not automatically effective in accomplishing the desires of those who fast. Fasting or no fasting, God only promises to answer our prayers when we ask according to His will. 1 John 5:14-15 tells us, "This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us - whatever we ask - we know that we have what we asked of him." In the prophet Isaiah's time, the people grumbled that they had fasted, yet God did not answer in the way they wanted (Isaiah 58:3-4). Isaiah responded by proclaiming that the external show of fasting and prayer, without the proper heart attitude, was futile (Isaiah 58:5-9).

Growing Up Spiritually

1. I was going nowhere in a hurry and I found this book God wrote and began to feast on it like a soldier devouring his last meal. When the Word of God is absent from my life my heart is hungry. When I feast on the Bread of Life, my heart overflows with joy.

I experience that reality of Scripture's power on a weekly basis. I have the privilege of standing before people with God's Word in my mouth and seeing the incredible impact that it makes. I see the truth penetrate people's hearts, grip their minds, move their emotions, and, best of all, engage their wills toward permanent change. God's Word is not only the tool of our conversion but it is also the tool of our transformation. It confronts us and convicts us about our true need.

I can personally testify to the power of God's truth when I've invited it to penetrate my heart, driving indifference and complacency from my soul. Long before I proclaim God's Word in our church service, I sit alone with His Word and invite God to change me, to grip me with the reality that He is speaking. I ask Him to fill my heart with faith as I focus on His words and to accomplish His purpose in me as Isaiah 55:10 promises. God is faithful to His Word and we who place ourselves in the flow of that unceasing work are the continual benefactors.

You want that kind of joy for yourself, don't you? Here's three ways you can feed your soul on God's Word:

READ IT: So that you don't miss the power of what you are reading, savor God's Word like you would your favorite dessert—take a bite or two, then put your spoon down. Don't rush. If you read it for twelve minutes each day, or one and a half hours per week, you could finish reading the Bible in a year, and you will be so incredibly blessed you will want to start all over again the next year.

As for where to start, begin in the gospel of John. Read it slowly and every time you see the word believe, underline it and ask yourself: Believe what? Be interactive like this with every book of the Bible. Pray before you begin reading each time. Ask the Lord to open your mind and heart to His truth and then believe that He will. Don't lie down when you read —the Bible is not a magazine or a novel. Give Scripture the respect it deserves.

QUESTION IT: Here are some prompts I use; over time, you can develop your own. What portion of my reading stands out to me? Why? • Is there an example for me to follow? • Is there an error for me to avoid? • Is there a duty for me to perform? • Is there any promise for me to claim? • Is there a sin for me to confess?

PLAN IT: Keep your commitment to God's Word going by making a plan how you can apply what you're learning. Take notes; when the Spirit convicts you of a sin, have a strategy to deal with it. The results will amaze you. I have never in my life picked up the Word of God with the phone unplugged and the door shut and given it my focus and my faith in a diligent way when it hasn't fed me with a new spiritual vitality. So if you're feeling a little spiritually famished today, I know what's going on. You need to get back into the Word of God. In its pages, God has provided all that is sufficient for godly living:
Ask God to renew your appetite for the book He wrote. It will take discipline to get into a daily pattern, but pure delight will keep you there. Ask yourself, “Is God's Word a priority in my life?” Even though I'm extremely committed to the Bible, I always have to come back to that question and never let anything crowd out the priority of Scripture in my life. I need to read it, I need to study it, I need to memorize it, I need to meditate upon it. It's not enough to just talk about it at church. If you're struggling or worried or don't know how to get victory over some temptation, get back into God's Word. It's food for your soul and the tool by which God will accomplish His work in you.

All the delight found in filling your life with God's Word is out in front of you; all of it promising greater joy, greater fulfillment, greater maturity, greater delight. Choose to make God's Word a priority and you'll be able to say like David, “Oh, how I love your law, it is my meditation all the day.” (Psalm 119:97)

Bread of Life

Then Jesus declared, "I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry." John 6:35

What emboldens you to take action? If someone were about to harm my family I would be moved to take action. If I saw a baby in need I would be motivated to take action. I believe that the Word of God is catalyst for us to take action. As we seek after God through His Holy Word we ought to be moved in to action. It's the stirring of the Holy Spirit!

There is much more to your Bible Study for Spiritual Growth than just reading and responding to scriptures. If you really want to grow in the Lord, you will have to make a commitment to yourself that you will seek Him - even when it is not convenient.

God loves you, and He wants more for you. But, God operates in covenants and promises. To receive a promise you read in the Word of God, you can't just know it. You have to meditate on it until it becomes a part of who you are.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 247px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_26XGVeOupOs/SXinIISgjSI/AAAAAAAAAB4/MrAz_o2Se8o/s320/Seek+God.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5294165120079924514" /> BLESSED is the man who walks and lives not in the counsel of the ungodly,
...But his delight and desire
are in the law of the Lord,
and on His law
(the precepts, the instructions,
the teachings of God)
he habitually meditates
(ponders & studies)
by day and by night.
-Psalms 1:1,2 (Amplified)

Do you delight in the teachings and instructions of God? Do they bring you joy and peace as you think on them throughout the day? That is what happens when they become a part of you.

The Lord promises you:
I love those who love me,
and those who seek me early
and diligently shall find me.
-Proverbs 8:17 (Amplified)

It is only through making time to find Him daily that you will become the Christian you know you are pre-destined to be. Now, I must warn you. There is a dangerous epidemic plaguing much of the Body of Christ today. It is called Spiritual Complacency. Don't let it infect you. For some reason, as Christians, we get satisfied with where we are in God. We assume that since we have followed God for X number of years, we don't need a Bible study for Spiritual Growth. We are as spiritually mature as we are going to get.

Well, Beloved, I have exciting news for you. No matter where you are in the Lord,

...if from there you will seek
(inquire for and require as necessity)
the Lord your God,
you will find Him
if you [truly]seek Him
with all your heart [and mind] and soul and life.
-Deuteronomy 4:29 (Amplified)

Every Step Forward

By Dr. James MacDonald (This is a pastor that I listen to often. I was moved by what he has written here and offer it to you.)

Every good step you’ve made in your spiritual life has been a step of humility.

Isn’t that right? Think about the seasons of growth you’ve experienced in your walk with Christ—those times when your faith went to the next level. Those seasons are marked by a sincere brokenness before God that opens our hearts to a genuine transformational encounter with the living Christ.

If you can point to a time when you came to Jesus for salvation, you know what humility is. On that day you said, “God, I need You. I need Your grace. I need Your forgiveness. There’s nothing in myself that can earn Your favor, I need what You’re offering.”

That’s humility. You can’t have a passionate, persevering relationship with Christ without it. You need to have the capacity, first to submit yourself to God, then submit yourself to the difficult circumstances of life to experience the full joy God intends for you to know. God will often use the painful circumstances of life to soften our hearts and to bring us to the point of brokenness to bow before Him. In those circumstances, humility looks like this: “Lord, You’re in control. You’ve allowed this for a reason. What do you want to teach me?” God loves that moment when you’re like, “Tell me what are You trying to teach me—I want to learn it. I want whatever it is You have for me.” If you lack wisdom, ask. “I want to learn something new in this, God. I don’t want to keep aching over the same stuff over and over! What is it, Lord?” There’s humility in that. And in that place, God will give you grace.

Humility stands empty-handed before God. No demands, no requests. In seasons like this, all we can do is fall into the embrace of our loving Savior and find Him to be enough. Humility says “no” to the clamoring voice of our flesh, “no” to the pride and self-confidence that has made us so restless and unhappy for so long.

I’ll say it again, every step forward is a step of humility.

Will I live a proud or a humble life? Hebrews 3 and 4 tells us all about Jesus . . . how He humbled Himself, how faithful He is. His model runs counter-culture to our world that wants to be on top . . . first. We want to stand out, but Jesus made Himself nothing. Now, there will be a day when every knee will bow before the Lord, but in God’s program, humility comes before exaltation.

If it’s true (and it is) that every step forward in your Christian life is a step of humility, then it’s also true that every step of pride is a step backward. We need God to help us experience an overwhelming sense of our own personal sinfulness and to bow our heads before Him daily. Through His strength alone, let’s get this pride problem dealt with. If this is your desire, then pray along with me,

Father, we humble ourselves before You. In bowing our heads and our hearts, we’re saying something—we’re saying that You are God and we are not. You are the ruler; we are nothing. You are everything. Lord, there’s great joy in that. How much misery in our lives has come from asserting ourselves and proving ourselves? Forgive us for the lost opportunities to live for you because of our own pride. Strip us now of anything that promotes ourselves and fill us with Your Spirit.

Might the example of Christ stir within us a fresh desire to live lives of humility. Help us to see the joy and freedom found in that secret place. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

60-60 Experiment

Starting the 60-60 Experiment:

For the next 60 days, try to stay in a continuous, honest conversation with God, willing to do his will moment by moment.

Set a watch or alarm to beep every 60 minutes, and put up sticky notes & reminders around you home, car & office, as a reminder to stay connected.

Try to turn your thoughts back to God all throughout the day, as often as you can. This simple conscious contact with God isn't easy, but it's all you have to do - everything else will begin to fall into place over time. Even if you're not yet convinced this is true, try it. Every 60 minutes, stop and recall "God is with me right now..." and let that propel you to ask God "Show me your will this next moment. I want to be willing to do your will as an act of love toward you."

Begin the experiment and see if this isn't the path to a far more satisfying life.

Get a Spiritual Running Partner?

Just like athletes who train to reach physical goals, we need spiritual training partners to provide encouragement, pacing, and motivation for our spiritual goals. A running partner is another person who I can trust with my struggles and concerns, as well as my dreams and goals. We encourage each other to become all God intends us to be.

A running partner is another person (or couple of people) who I am willing to learn to entrust with my deepest concerns, spiritual struggles, and sins, as well as dreams, successes, and plans to grow.

Together, we'll agree to walk together for a season in complete honesty to help each other grow spiritually to be more like Christ. Like exercise partners, we are running with each other along a spiritual path. The purpose of running together is to provide the encouragement, pacing, and motivation we all need to keep running toward wholeness.

We are agreeing to listen, to care, to pray for one another, to point out patterns we see, and to urge each other to keep moving forward in growth to become all God intended us to be.

The goal is to think, live, and act more and more like Jesus would if he were living my life, working at my job, and in my relationships.

Who Should I Look For?

A person you already trust who is part of your church (best for the long-term) or from outside your church.
Husbands and wives can be partners, but often it is difficult to get detached feedback because of proximity and affect on each other.
You can have more than one running partner, but be careful not to spread yourself too thin.

How Does it Work?

Agree to “run together” for a defined period of time. (take it in short bursts so nobody feels stuck)
Set a time and place to meet or have a phone appointment weekly, and agree to meet face-to-face at least monthly.
Take turns asking each other the “How Are You Running” questions. Let the conversation go where the Holy Spirit leads. Pay attention to upholding the “Rules of Running.” We suggest you re-read the rules before each meeting as a reminder.

Rules of Running

Accept and encourage as often as possible.
Ask questions often; give advice once with permission.
Give reproof or correction only when absolutely necessary.
Never give judgment.
Always protect confidentiality.

“How Are You Running” Questions

What do you think God is trying to do in your life right now?
How have you experienced the fruits of the Spirit lately (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control)?
How have you treated those you do life with?
What sin have you been conscious of this week?
If there’s one area you need to focus on to better love God, love people, build character, or be the body (Christ’s Church), what would it be?
What’s one thing you will intentionally do to take steps of growth in this area?
Have you said the “last 10%” or have you held back today?

"60-60 Experiment" from the book Soul Revolution

Tuesday Meal Fast, July 15th

Acts 9:10-12
10 Now there was a disciple at Damascus named Ananias. The Lord said to him in a vision, “Ananias.” And he said, “Here I am, Lord.” 11 And the Lord said to him, “Rise and go to the street called Straight, and at the house of Judas look for a man of Tarsus named Saul, for behold, he is praying, 12 and he has seen in a vision a man named Ananias come in and lay his hands on him so that he might regain his sight.”

As you can see I have added a verse to our scripture for this week. Over the pass couple of weeks I have found my focus on vision. It seem as if God says been saying to me that I should call us to remember the vision. Our vision has the greatest importance to what God is calling us to. It is important to remember that we are striving to be intentionally multi-ethnic. We want our worship to reflect the that diversity. Most of all we want to see people receive Christ as their Lord and Savior. As you read the Acts text and some of the text below. Enter a time of prayer remembering our vision. Visions like ours only come by dependence on God and intentional work by us. I have placed list of items at the bottom to focus your prayer time around.

OUR VISION NEEDS FAITH...
1. Faith in the power of the gospel
a. To save souls - Ro 1:16-17
b. To produce souls that have been born again - 1 Pe 1:22-25
2. Faith in the power of the Lord
a. To open doors for His prepared servants - 1 Co 16:8-9; Re 3:8
b. To empower His servants wanting to do His will - Ph 4:13; Ep 3:16,20

 OUR VISION NEEDS BOLDNESS...
1. A virtue displayed often by the early Christians - Ac 4:13; 9:27; 13:46; 14:3; 19:8; 28:31
2. For which they prayed and solicited prayers - Ac 4:29,30; Ep 6:19-20
3. A boldness based upon our hope in Christ - 2 Co 3:12
4. To say what needs to be said, when it needs to be said, despite the circumstances - 1 Th 2:2

OUR VISION NEEDS PERSISTENCE...
1. Not losing heart, for we shall reap in due time - Ga 6:9
2. Always abounding, knowing that our labor is not in vain - 1 Co15:58

-- Many visions are never realized because people give up too soon!

Prayer Focus
1) Musicians that can help us reflect the diversity that we seek.
2) A team of volunteers that can work with Jr. & Sr. high young people.
3) People with the heart for children ministry to be added to the team.
4) Latino persons that desire to worship in a multi- ethnic setting.
5) Hmong persons that desire to worship in a multi- ethnic setting.

Tuesday Meal Fast, July 1st

Joel 2:27-28

27 You shall know that I am in the midst of Israel, and that I am the Lord your God and there is none else. And my people shall never again be put to shame. 28 “And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions.

God had abundantly blessed Judah, but the people had taken God and His blessings for granted. Their faith had degenerated into an empty formalism and their lives into moral decadence. "Under divine inspiration Joel told the people that the locust plague was a warning of a greater judgment that was imminent unless they repented and returned to full fellowship with God. If they did, God would abundantly pardon them, restore the health of the land, and give them again the elements needed to offer the sacrifices. The ceremonial system was designed to express a heart relationship with God. By their sin they had forfeited any right to religious ceremony"

The above words come from Al Maxey who is commenting on this minor prophet. As I read his word it made me stop and think about the ways in which I may be take God and His blessings for granted. Have I in any way reduced my relationship with God down to empty formalism? This is not the place that i desire my relationship with God to be. I do not want anything in my life to hinder what God is trying to in my life or with ministry of The Compass.

So here are my questions for you as you consider this scripture during your meal fast.
1) Are you taking God for granted?
2) What are the areas in your life that you need to repent of?
3) Could any of your actions be hindering the ministry of The Compass?

As you pray today and wait to hear from God. Please pray for God's continual direction of our ministry together. Hold up the need for our weekly location. As well we need God to provide Kingdom Labors so that we can do the work that our Lord has set before us. As always if you have any comments or feel God pressing anything on you about our ministry please use the comment button below. So the parallel clause by contrast expresses the joy, not kept silent as this, but uttered in "singing."

He will rejoice over you with joy, He will not only be well pleased with you, upon your repentance and reformation, He will take you into His favor, but He will take a complacency in you, as the bridegroom does in his bride, or the bride in her ornaments, Isaiah 62:3-5. The conversion of sinners and the consolation of saints are the joy of angels, for they are the joy of God him-self.

Where are the places in your life that you know God has been singing over you and the places you need God to sing over you? What other insight has God shown you in this scripture? Feel free to send a comment back to me.

The reason for our time of fasting (weather you do a meal fast or an all day fast) for June and July is to direct our time of prayer towards our needs. Here are some of our needs:
1) We need a gifted person to lead our children's ministry for the long term.
2) We need more labors that can continue to help us grow and equip people for the work that God has for us.
3) We need our location locked down as we look towards September and the start of our weekly worship services.

Wake Up and Draw Near

“Let us then draw the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need” Hebrews 4:16

It is a great thing to know that we don’t need to wake God up since the God who watches over us neither slumbers nor sleeps Psalm 121:3! In reality, we’re the ones who need to wake up. We need to wake up to the truth that we are not as capable as we think we are to deal with life’s challenges; that our wisdom and instincts are flawed; that trying to manage life by the seat of our pants usually gets us into a heap of trouble.

So, thankfully, the writer to the Hebrews assures us that we can come to Jesus with what the text literally says is “unstaggering confidence”—confidence that He understands our plight and is ready to help us in our time of need. And, in case you’re wondering how He will help you in your time of need, think about His grace that will help you endure, His mercy, His power to overcome, His wisdom to show you the way. And don’t forget His calming presence and His peace that passes understanding in the midst of life’s storms. They are all available for the asking!

So, next time you are overwhelmed with life and don’t know what to do, take a little advice from my friend Eloise: wake Him up! And don’t wait until He is your last resort. You’ll get exhausted and disheartened if you try to bail out your boat all by yourself!

There is an old song that people sing in churches. It goes, “I need thee, Oh, I need thee! Every hour I need thee! Oh, bless me now my Savior, I come to thee.” You’ll need Him sometime—probably today—so make that the theme song of your life.

YOUR JOURNEY…
Would you say that Jesus is your first option when life gets in your face? Or is He your last resort?

What specific steps can you take toward being aware of God’s presence and desire to step in and help you?

At least once today, plan to intentionally call on God. Ask for His wisdom to know what to do and His grace to do it in a way that would be pleasing to Him. Make it a daily!

This has been adapted from some recent reading.

Easter Service

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_26XGVeOupOs/R-E8qD9_SmI/AAAAAAAAABM/bvIEon9ek2Y/s320/Compass+Easter+Flyer+(Revised).jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5179487739770260066" />

800 Minutes of Prayer

As Easter quickly comes this week I want to bring before you a challenge. I do not want to let Easter go by without giving attention to praying for people that God would have us reach as a fellowship. So the challenge is this. Bringing forth eight hundred minutes of prayer for our service, for our community and for our selves. You may ask how can we pull off eight hundred minutes of prayer in the next few days. I am glad you asked. We have about 40 people committed to our launch team. If every person commits to praying just ten minutes this week focusing in on what I stated above and invite one person to do the same with them we would reach the eight hundred minutes.

There some people reading this who are not a part of the launch team but would love to commit to this time of prayer with us. I want to invite you to do so. I only ask that you use the comments button below and let me know how many minutes you are covering. I would love to see us go over a thousand minutes.

Please use Colossians 1:9-15 to help lead you in this time of prayer. It will not lead you in a way that you may think but I believe the results of hearing what Paul has to say about prayer will help us grow.

Pray that we discern God's Will
Notice that Paul's first request is this: I ask that "God fill you with the knowledge of His will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding." The word "fill" means to be completely filled or totally controlled. The word for knowledge is the normal Greek word for knowledge with a prefix that intensifies the meaning. Paul's primary concern is not for physical health, material prosperity, effective witnessing, or a greater experience of spiritual gifts. Paul's first and primary concern is that the Colossians come to love and understand God and submit to His will.

When Jesus was in the Garden of Gethsemane He sought to submit to the will of the Father. Many of us have turned this around. We spend our time pleading with God that MY will would be done. We want God to give us what WE want. We want Him to see the wisdom of our desires. Some even proclaim that praying, "Thy will be done" is a weak prayer. All I can say to such nonsense is, "tell that to Jesus."

We come to understand God's will as we come to understand God. In our marriage relationships we very often can tell you what our spouse will say to a certain request. How can we do this? We have come to understand our mate. We know what they like and don't like. We have a good idea of what their "will" is. The same is true of God.
We understand his plan and purpose in life as we come to know Him in the Bible, through prayer and through our obedience. Paul prays that the Colossians would not be satisfied with a superficial relationship with God. He prays that they would continue to build a relationship with Him until they understand what God is doing and why.

Pray that we DO God's Will
Paul does not only pray that the Colossians are able to discern God's will. He prays also that they might have the power to DO God's will. In verse 10 we read that Paul prayed that they might understand "in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please Him in every way." Paul is not praying just that we might be more knowledgeable . . .He is praying that we might learn more about God so that we will live more faithfully before Him. As one wise person said, "you can be a master of theology and a failure at living."

Paul is seeking balance in the lives of these young Christians. He prays that they might understand . . . and when they have understood, that they might live on the basis of that understanding.
Do you see how much different the content of this prayer is from the prayers we often pray? When you pray for others are you "aiming low?" Are you asking the Lord for superficial things and neglecting the greater things? Are you focusing on the temporary and neglecting the eternal? Dare we spend all our time focusing on the body and no time focusing on the soul?

The Goodness of God

Many people live their lives with little regard to the goodness of God. They are unaware of how gracious God has been and is willing to be toward them. So I wonder if you have given much thought to the goodness of God...? All the blessings He bestows on us.

One passage of Scripture that ought to give us pause is the one written in Romans 2:4-11, in which Paul expounds upon "The Goodness Of God." From verse 4, we can glean some important things about...

THE NATURE OF HIS GOODNESS

HIS RICHES...
1. He is rich in grace - Ephesians 1:7
2. He is rich in mercy - Ephesians 2:4
3. He is rich in supplying need - Ph 4:19
4. He is rich in giving things to enjoy - 1 Ti 6:17
5. He is rich in the strength He provides the believer - Ephesias 3:16,21

HIS LONGSUFFERING...
1. "Longsuffering" this describes "a slowness in avenging wrath"
2. We see God suffering long...
a. In the days of Noah, prior to the flood - cf. 1 Peter 3:20
b. In our present day, prior to the Day of Judgment - 2 Peter 3:9-15a

The Psalmist summarizes well the nature of God's goodness: "But You, O Lord, are a God full of compassion, and gracious, Longsuffering and abundant in mercy and truth." (Psalms 86:15). As we return to our text in Romans, we are told of...

THE PURPOSE OF HIS GOODNESS

SHOULD LEAD US TO REPENTANCE...
1. God's goodness is intended to cause humanity to repent - Roman 2:4
2. Based on Paul's description of repentance elsewhere, God's goodness should produce...
a. Godly sorrow which leads to repentance - 2 Co 7:9-10
b. A change of mind (the actual meaning of metanoia, repentance)
c. A turn from sin to God (as evidence of repentance) - 2 Co 7:10-11

SHOULD LEAD US TO DO WHAT IS GOOD...
1. As just described, an indication of true repentance - 2 Corinthians 7:11
2. As later described in our text, it should lead to doing good...
Seeking glory, honor, immortality - Romans 2:7b
1) Glory and honor that will come at the revelation of Jesus Christ - cf. 1 Pe 1:7; 2 Co 4:16-18
2) Immortality (incorruption) that will be given at the same time - 1 Co 15:51-54

So here’s the deal, "eternal life" will be given to those who are properly motivated by God's goodness to repent and do good (Romans 2:7). Our call is to display His glory in such a way that we live worthy of the eternal life given to us by way of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. We need to always be thinking about turning our thoughts toward this idea of the mercy of God, to recognize immediately that mercy is entirely the result of and the effect of God’s goodness. It comes not from any other cause, nor any other source, nor from any other reason, except from God’s own goodness.

Both goodness and greatness meet in God.

The True Meaning of Christmas

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_26XGVeOupOs/R2tAHz-awUI/AAAAAAAAABE/jd1PtVWPRKI/s320/images.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5146277502156194114" />
Romans 5:1 - Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.

We live in a sinful world and I’m sure that sometimes there isn’t peace in our relationships, on our jobs or in the communities that we live in. I know that there can even be discord in the church at one time or another that can cause relationships to be strained. I know that when you have kids there isn’t always peace in the house. Sometimes the ideas kids have clash with their parents, but sometimes kids just make a lot of noise in the house. Sometimes even between husband and wife there is a lack of peace.

The truth is that at one point we were all at war with God. There's still evidence of it. If we think, while we're listening to God's Word in a sermon or somewhere else, "this is boring," or "what does this have to do with me?" When we fail to take time to hear what God has to say, then we are at war with God. God wants us to hear what he has to say.

But when He came on the scene, Jesus Christ stepped in between God and us and made peace. This is the peace that the angels spoke about to the shepherds and this is the peace that Paul wrote about to the Christians in Rome. "Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ." This is the peace that we have because Jesus Christ came to this earth on that first Christmas and lived a perfect life in our place and suffered the punishment we deserved for all of our conflicts with God.

We should understand this peace that we have with God. No matter what other conflicts we may have in our lives, we have peace with God. When we receive Christ as our Lord and Savior, our conflict with God is no more. Now we no longer suffer with any of the conflicts we may have on this earth, but we enjoy peace in our relationship with God.

What about people that are lost? Our call is to get them to understand that, as they trust that Jesus Christ has made peace between them and God and they too get to enjoy that peace with God now. There is no Christmas that we celebrate the birth of Christ that we shouldn’t also remember sharing the gift of Christ. The receiving and sharing of Christ are one and the same. We should not do one without the other.

So may you enjoy the peace given by the birth and work of Christ. I pray that God will bring someone across your path to share the gift that you so enjoy.

Our First Service

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_26XGVeOupOs/R2oGnT-awTI/AAAAAAAAAA8/JnAFmosOnH8/s320/DSC00114.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5145932796670951730" />
This past Sunday on the 16th of December The Compass embarked on the journey that God has set before us. After months of meeting people, sharing our vision and planning for this day it was great to see God bring it together. I believe that we have put our stamp on this ministry. God is calling us to be more then a fellowship of believers. I believe He is calling us to be true ministers of His gospel. As we gathered for prayer before the service I told everyone that this would be a ministry that has not come to play but come to pray, has not come to play but come to praise and that we have not come to play but come to proclaim. There is much work still to do and our sights are set on our Lord and what He desires for us to do in the community that He has set us in. We are looking forward to our next service, which is on January 13th 2008. Our prayer is that people will return and that we would see people from the community as well. We are so thankful for all the people that came out to support us.

The Vision of the Compass

At our launch team meeting this past Sunday we took a look at our vision and studied some scripture to reenforce why we are being called to bring this vision into reality. It is important to not only have a vision but to also have an understanding of how you will live out the vision. Please take some time to read through our vision and our understanding of how we will live it out.

The vision of The Compass is an urban, multi-ethnic, relevant, holistic, and Christ-centered community that would serve as one part of an overall vision of Christian Community Development in the city of St. Paul; calling and equipping the people of the city in a holistic manner to be set free from the things of this world that can hold us in bondage. In Christ Jesus there is freedom. “Where the Spirit of the Lord is there is liberty” II Corinthians 3:17 We're not aiming for another religious activity, but an authentic pursuit of Christ and the power and purpose He can bring to each of our lives. And really, T H A T I S C H U R C H! Not pews and pulpits, but people committed to a vital, g r o w in g relationship with J e s u s C h r i s t and one another.

Liberated people bring liberation to people!

As liberated people we will live this vision out by:

1. Building conviction about diversity
a. Biblically: people must know why biblically we should have multicultural churches (see Rev. 7:9-12; Acts 6:1-7; 11:19-26; 13:1-3; Matt. 28:19-20; Eph. 2:14-22; Gal. 3:26-28).
b. Strategically: the urban reality is multicultural and the church must not lag behind the world’s diversity but, instead, demonstrate a healthy model of unity in diversity in Christ to the world.

2. Affirming diversity as part of the church’s identity and vision
a. Through messages: the pastor must speak about it frequently in his messages.
b. Through planning: diversity usually doesn’t just happen; there must be intentionality in our plans to grow as a diverse church.
c. Through worship, outreach, and ministries: worship should be enriched by elements from diverse cultures, and ministries should be developed or refined to be sensitive to concerns of diverse cultures.

3. Building a multicultural leadership team and staff
a. Pray for God to direct you to the people of other cultures he has to grow and serve with you.
b. Pursue those people, challenging them with your vision and their role in it.
c. Disciple/Train them to grow and serve with you.

4. Enjoying progress and anticipate problems
a. Celebrate diversity: it’s a foretaste of heaven that we can relish right here and now!
b. Evaluate dynamics: be alert to how people are interacting on deeper levels.
c. Learn to identify warning signals: factions, undercurrents, and "mysterious disappearances."
d. Facilitate communication: an ongoing need to not only solve problems but maximize what God intends diversity to be.

Our Place of Worship!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_26XGVeOupOs/R0PFnlrzt7I/AAAAAAAAAA0/IVcZhDH5ijA/s320/DSC00025.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5135165284053923762" />

1620 Ames Avenue
St. Paul, MN 55106

Please feel free to click on the title Our place of worship. There is a great deal of wisdom that can be found in Jeremiah 17. You can see how far off the God track Judah had gotten. Jeremiah prays for deliverance and tells the people that God calls them to keep the sabbath Holy.

In the midst of laying out what it looks like to be in such sin, which is because there was a lack of trust in God, the writer turns our attention to what it is like for the person that trust in God.

First, the person is blessed not because he/she trust in God but because his/her trust is God. Second, this person that understands that their trust is God dose not have to fear because even in the driest moments of life as they push into God they are feed with all that they need. Lastly, the person whose trust is God and is feed by God is able to still bear fruit for the glory of God in the dry moments of life. Many of us walk around hoping to be filled and feed by what the world offers us. But the only sustainer of our lives is our Lord of Lords, our King of Kings Jesus the Christ.

Question;
Where has your trust been lately?

Are you allowing God to feed you?

God stands ready to supply all of your needs. To fill you with his grace and mercy. Jeremiah 17 ends with God stating what He will do if His people will trust Him and keep the Sabbath Holy. I will let you read it for yourself (Jeremiah 17: 24-26).

Peace Be With You!

NAVIGATION

Numbers 35:10b-12

When you cross over the Jordan into the land of Canaan, then you shall select cities to be cities of refuge for you, which the manslayer who kills any person without intent may flee there. The cities shall be for you a refuge from the avenger, that the manslayer may not die until he stands before the congregation for judgment. EVS

I am pulling these verses out of the context of which they are placed. The context is God speaking to Moses, saying that he is to set up cities where people can go to be safe. This is to be a place where the one seeking to destroy can’t get at them.

As you read this text you will find that the context is very clear as to what job Moses had to do. It is clear what God was asking Moses to do. The reason why a safe place had to be created.

There were two words that kept speaking to me (refuge and avenger).

This week as you continue to reflect on this text and more over these words consider these questions.

How has the avenger (Satan) been coming after you lately?

Where are the places in your relationship with God are you finding refuge?

Read Psalm 46:1-5
Where does God say our refuge is?

East Azimuth

Azimuth - A direction set on a fixed position - Our azimuth is CHRIST

EAST - Sharing the good news of Jesus with boldness - Ephesians 6:19-20

Pray also for me, that whenever I open my mouth, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should.

We are called to put on armor of God. Be a soldier for God. Sometimes being a soldier is hard. We have to be brave. To stand up for what you believe is very hard. It takes work and discipline. It takes having your armor in place and ready at all times. It also takes submitting to God. To tell Him that we will be His servants no matter what happens. And if we serve Him, God has promised that He will be faithful to give us the reward of eternal life and a crown of glory.

This is a good prayer to pray. Many people pray all kinds of unbiblical prayers today to bind Satan, cast down territorial spirits, and all such things. But here we have a true spiritual warfare prayer in the context of one of the premiere teachings on spiritual warfare. We know that the true power to change people is in the Gospel message:

Romans 1:16 I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile.

So a very important prayer for other Christians is that they will have the boldness to proclaim the Gospel. Witnessing is not easy. It takes guts, supernatural guts. God can give you the supernatural guts to proclaim the Gospel if you really desire it as Paul did. Paul was in prison simply for preaching the Gospel. This could have made him fearful to continue. But because people were praying for him he continued until he was finally put to death. Because of Paul we have the Gentile church today and countless Christians through the ages are products of his witness among other foundational Apostles. We owe him a great debt, but we also owe that debt to Christians who did spiritual warfare by praying that Paul would be fearless in his proclamation of the Gospel message.

We are to encourage by preaching the Word and holding to sound doctrine.

2 Timothy 4:2 Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage— with great patience and careful instruction.

Titus 1:9 He must hold firmly to the trustworthy message as it has been taught, so that he can encourage others by sound doctrine and refute those who oppose it.

We are to encourage young men to be self-controlled.

Titus 2:6 Similarly, encourage the young men to be self-controlled.

We need to encourage people to be busy about the things of the Lord and to help the timid and the weak.

1 Thessalonians 5:14 And we urge you, brothers, warn those who are idle, encourage the timid, help the weak, be patient with everyone.

Leadership in the church is to teach the Word to encourage and rebuke.

Titus 2:15 These, then, are the things you should teach. Encourage and rebuke with all authority. Do not let anyone despise you.

We are to encourage one another to live holy lives so that we will not be caught in sin.

Hebrews 3:13 But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called Today, so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness.

The Power of Preaching

Preaching the Gospel
The People’s Responsibility (19a)
The Pastor’s Responsibility (19b-20)
A. Preach the Word
B. Preach Boldly
C. Preach the Gospel
D. Preach Wherever

Have you ever seen a real marine, one that looks the part? You know, big and muscular. He would have battle scars and the stories to go with them. He would say that he hopes that when we get to heaven, we can go out and fight the forces of darkness. He wants to battle demons.

I don’t think we’ll be doing that in the Kingdom, but guess what….we are doing that now. You can’t see them, hear them, or feel them physically, but you have enemies all around you who are trying to injure you, hurt you, and drag you down.

That is why it is so important to know about spiritual warfare, and what God has given to us for defense, and what our marching orders are. The armor that God has given to us is all defensive…even the sword for the most part. This is because all we’re supposed to do is stand in the victory that we have in Christ.

But there are two weapons God has given us to engage the enemy. The first is prayer which Paul wrote about in 6:18. It is our secret weapon. It is how we call down air support from heaven. It is how we draw on the infinite power of God to help us when we are under attack. The power of prayer is one of the greatest weapons God has given to us against the enemy, yet too many of us neglect it in our lives.

But there is another weapon God has given to us, and this weapon is two-pronged. It serves to strengthen our own soldiers in this battle, and serves to take forces away from the enemy and add them to our own forces.

Imagine if you were a soldier in Iraq, or part of this global war on terrorism, and you were given the mission of infiltrating Al Qaeda, and persuading some of them to leave Al Qaeda to fight on the side of America, and fight against Al Qaeda instead. Can you imagine how difficult this would be? Can you imagine how scary, but also how thrilling it would be to be on the inside of the Al Qaeda terrorist organization, trying to get terrorists to defect and begin fighting on our side instead?

Yet this is what we learn about in Ephesians 6:19-20. God has called people to this very task, but in a spiritual war, not a physical one.

There are only two sides in this war, and Jesus said in Mark 9:40 that whoever is not for us is against us. Therefore, whoever is not on the side of Jesus is on the side of Satan. In other words, only believers are on God’s side, and everyone else is on Satan’s side.

But God has given us a way to help people leave Satan’s side, and join our side. God has given us a way to free people from their bondage to Satan, and bring them into freedom in Christ. This is something we want to do, because the more people we have on our side, the less Satan has on his. And though Satan has already lost the war, he still wants to do as much damage as possible to us, and even to the people who are fighting for him. So we must rescue as many as we can.

And God has given us a weapon to do this. What is this weapon? It is the preaching and teaching of the Scriptures, and specifically, the Gospel.

I. The People’s Responsibility (19a)

19and [pray] for me,

You must pray for your pastor. Pastor’s, as the spiritual leaders in the church, frequently come under much greater spiritual attack than the rest of Christians. Satan knows that if he can get a pastor to fall into sin, he can keep people away from church, and ruin the reputation of Christians among unbelievers, and sometimes even destroy that church.

We hear so many reports of pastor who have fallen into sin, sexual sin where they run off with their secretary, financial sin where they steal funds from the church, sins of addiction where they become enslaved to drugs and alcohol. A large part of this is that the pastor made some bad decisions, and thought he wouldn’t get caught.

But another side to the failure of so many pastors is that pastors are undergoing incredible amounts of spiritual attack, and the people of their church are not lifting and supporting their pastor in prayer as they should be. In spiritual warfare, pastors and preachers of the Word need the prayer support of the people in their churches.

Now in the context, Paul has one thing in mind which he wants prayer for, and it is for boldness in preaching of the Word, and specifically, preaching the Gospel. The people of the church must be praying for their pastor to preach the Gospel clearly, and accurately, and boldly. Why? So that the church can grow, both in numbers and in maturity.

It is through the preaching of the Word that people are saved, and it is through the preaching of the Word that the saved are strengthened. Satan knows the power of preaching, and so he does everything he can to stop pastors from preaching. He will get churches to cut the sermon out of their service in favor of drama or more music. Satan will get churches to tell the pastor that people don’t want to hear the Bible taught any more, and so if he could just tell them a bunch of stories, that would be better.

But preaching is warfare activity, and when we let go of preaching, we are losing a battle to Satan. So, the church must pray that their pastor preaches the Word, and preaches it accurately, and preaches it boldly.

Charles Spurgeon is considered to be one of the most eloquent and bold preachers who ever lived. He lived in the nineteenth century, and all of his sermons were drawn from Scripture. He preached so well, they called him the prince of preachers.

Someone else once said “There will be more Power in the pulpit when there is more Prayer in the pew.”

Now, if it is the people’s responsibility to pray for their pastor to preach, it is the pastor’s responsibility to not let them down, and do his best to preach.

II. The Pastor’s Responsibility (19b-20)

A. Preach the Word

that utterance may be given to me,

This word utterance that is used here is actually the word “word.” In Greek it is the word logos. And it is singular, not plural, so could be translated “a word” or even “the word.” When Paul preaches, he first and foremost wants to speak a word from God.

If a pastor gets up to preach, and he doesn’t bring a word from God, his words are no better than anybody else’s words, and you shouldn’t listen to him. How high are God’s words above man’s words? God’s word is infinitely higher. And so if a pastor says that people can’t handle the Word that is a man you don’t have to listen to because he has nothing to say.

The only thing worth preaching and listening to is the Word of God.

Paul wants to preach the Word, and nothing but the Word, and so should any pastor who attempts to lead a church today. If we are not preaching the Word, we might as well sit down and be quiet, for we have nothing of substance to say.

But beyond preaching the Word, Paul also wants to preach boldly.

A. Preach Boldly

that I may open my mouth boldly

In Acts 4:29-31, we see the apostles pray for boldness in their preaching as well. God gave them boldness, and as a result, the church began to live as the church should.

It is very nerve wracking to preach boldly when you know that what you are going to say is not popular. And we live in a day and age when the preaching of the Word is not popular. People’s ears itch after so many other things than the Word of God. They want their ears to be tickled. They want church to be closer to a comedy social club than a house of instruction.

And if preaching the Word is unpopular among Christians, it is even more unpopular among non-Christians. To them, the Word of God is foolish. It is a bunch of stories and fairy tales, and calls to trust in a God they cannot see for things they are not really sure they want.

It is for this reason, and many others, that Paul desires to preach boldly, and so asks that the Ephesians Christians pray for him to preach boldly.

Paul wants to be bold in his preaching, and request that people pray for him to be bold when he preaches the Word. Now the reason

B. Preach the Gospel

to make known the mystery of the gospel,

This is crucial. In this passage on spiritual warfare, the gospel is crucial to understand, and it is critical to know why Paul focused on preaching the Gospel.

When we preach and teach about how Jesus came to earth, and how He lived a sinless life, and how He died on the cross for our sins, and rose again the third day, and is seated now at the right hand of God the Father in heaven, and will come again one day to judge the living and the dead—when we preach these truths, it is a rallying cry for us, that Jesus Christ has defeated sin, death, and Satan.

But aside from that, when we preach these truths, it is a reminder to our enemy the devil, that he has lost this war. He is a defeated foe. He has no power over us. We are on the winning side. We are champions over him.

So not only is the Gospel and encouragement to us, and a reminder to Satan of his defeat, but preaching the Gospel is also how we persuade unbelievers to believe in Jesus for everlasting life. Every time a person believes in Jesus for everlasting life, they leave Satan’s kingdom of darkness, and are transferred into Jesus’ kingdom of light. Every person that believes in Jesus is another blow to Satan, and another victory for Jesus Christ.

This is why preaching the Word, and especially, preaching the Gospel, is warfare activity. It is how we advance the front line against our already defeated foe.

So this is why people should pray for their pastors: so that they will preach the Word, and preach it boldly, and especially preach the gospel so that the Kingdom of God can advance and grow as people hear the Gospel and believe in Jesus for everlasting life. This is why we must make the most of every opportunity, and preach wherever, whenever, and to whomever we can.

C. Preach Wherever

20 for which I am an ambassador in chains; that in it I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.

When Paul is writing this, he is writing from prison. He is chained between two strong Roman guards. The reason he is in prison is because he was preaching the Gospel boldly.

Most people in that situation would say, “Paul, look where your bold preaching has gotten you. You are chained up in prison. If you would just tone it down a bit, maybe you could get out. You can have greater effectiveness out of prison than you can in. You could preach to so many more people if you were free.”

But Paul doesn’t see it that way. He recognizes that he is in prison because he was preaching boldly, but he doesn’t think that the gospel should be preached in a weak way. It is the power of salvation, and should be proclaimed with power, conviction, passion, and boldness.

So he doesn’t see these two guards on either side of him as a hindrance to his preaching. Instead, he probably just preached away at them, and they couldn’t go anywhere. He literally had a captive audience. And even couple hours, new guards would come in, and Paul would begin again with the new guards.

And these weren’t any old guards. These were imperial guards. Paul recognized that he had an opportunity to preach to some men who would probably never hear the Gospel in any other way, and these men had areas of influence and power that most people in the Roman Empire didn’t have.

So in verse 19, when Paul mentions his chains, he says he is an ambassador in chains. He is a prisoner for Christ, and is doing everything he can to continue to proclaim the Gospel, even when he is in prison.

All of us also need to adopt such a perspective. We think, “If only I had the opportunity to teach a bigger group, then I would prepare better, and teach with more conviction. But if it’s only five or six, why bother?”

Paul doesn’t care if it’s two or two thousand, he is going to preach with accuracy, and boldness because he knows that every person that comes his way has been sent by God.

We are in a battle for our lives and for the lives of those who are not yet saved. The Spiritual armor Paul writes about in verses 10-17 is given to us for our personal protection against the enemy. Our secret weapon is prayer. But it is through preaching that we get our marching orders, it is through preaching that the lost world hears the gospel so they can be transferred from the side of the enemy and join our side, the side of our victorious Jesus Christ.

So pray for those who teach and preach the Word. Pray that God will give them understanding of His Word to teach it boldly and accurately. Pray that the Gospel will be spread and people will believe in Jesus for everlasting life.

A day is coming when this war will finally be over, and we will stand before Jesus, our General, and He will hand out metals and rewards for how well we have stood and fought for Him. On that day, I hope you and I will hear Him say, “Well done. You have fought well.” In order to hear that, you will need to have your armor on, and you will need to be in prayer, especially that the gospel will be spread.

Kingdom Party

On September 29, 2007, The Compass Launch Team took a step of faith by hosting a Kingdom Party in the community that we intend to focus our outreach energy. Our hope was to introduce the ministry of The Compass to the community but with fast approaching storm clouds and 40+ mph winds, it seemed we would be kept from delivering the event that had been planned by many. We stopped to gather for prayer. We were of single mind as we gave God praise.

Teams of people then went door to door through the near-by apartment complexes and the children started to gather at the carnival, there were fifty-five people in all. They earned tickets at various stations enabling them to “buy” great prizes. There was also free lunch for all who came, along with a Bible and books presenting the gospel for youth and children!

We watched how God took this event from nothing and literally placed every part into action. Help was needed to help run the Kingdom Party. It came in the form of members from Crossroads Church. You can’t have a carnival without prizes. They came from the World Vision Store House. There was no access to rest rooms in a building. A blessing came in the form of port-a-potties being donated. The most important reason for us doing this event was to share the Word of God to people. This came in the form of a great gift from the International Bible Society. Our needs were clear: people, money and Bibles. God dealt with each need one by one.

On a dreary rainy day, children and adults went home with smiles on their faces!

I thought you might enjoy to seeing a few pictures of the day.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_26XGVeOupOs/RwGtH30oF4I/AAAAAAAAAAU/TDjxqp9-2os/s320/DSC00017.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5116561002424964994" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_26XGVeOupOs/RwGtIX0oF5I/AAAAAAAAAAc/fJw6vMnF3LM/s320/DSC00020.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5116561011014899602" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_26XGVeOupOs/RwGtIn0oF6I/AAAAAAAAAAk/-MVdaToIGKg/s320/DSC00021.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5116561015309866914" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_26XGVeOupOs/RwGtI30oF7I/AAAAAAAAAAs/rhGQ1RlzA8k/s320/DSC00022.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5116561019604834226" />

Why Tithing?

Today at our launch team meeting after opening with worship I (Pastor Terrance) got to share with the team how God has provided for us with some of the sound equipment we need for our worship service. This was the spring board into why tithing is important in the life of a church. God's economic program is twofold: For the temporal needs of his people, and financial aid in the promotion of the gospel. The tithing system is God's original plan for promoting and maintaining the gospel and has never been changed.

The tree of knowledge of good and evil was an everlasting reminder that God is the rightful owner of the earth and everything in it. Adam was guilty of stealing something that did not belong to him. Today we are tested by the tithe. It is a safeguard against selfishness, which is the root of all other sins.

What two distinct things belong to God? The Sabbath and the tithe. We can recognize or disregard either of them--the seventh part of our time and the tenth part of that which we possess. We can steal God's time, His money or both.

Bible Basics
Old Testament

A tithe of everything from the land, whether grain from the soil or fruit from the trees, belongs to the LORD; it is holy to the Lord. Leviticus 27:30 (NIV)

Honor the LORD with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops; (10) then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine. Proverbs 3:9-10 (NIV)

A generous man will prosper; he who refreshes others will himself be refreshed. Proverbs 11:25 (NIV)

"Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in My house. Test Me in this," says the LORD Almighty, "and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it. Malachi 3:10 (NIV)

New Testament

Freely you have received, freely give. Matthew 10:8 (NIV)

Give to Caesar what is Caesar's, and to God what is God's. Matthew 22:21 (NIV)

Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. Luke 6:38 (NIV)

So if you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth, who will trust you with true riches? Luke 16:11 (NIV)

It is more blessed to give than to receive. Acts 20:35 (NIV)

Now it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful. 1 Corinthians 4:2 (NIV)

On the first day of every week, each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with his income, saving it up, so that when I come no collections will have to be made. 1 Corinthians 16:2 (NIV)

For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for our sakes He became poor, so that you through His poverty might become rich. 2 Corinthians 8:9 (NIV)

Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. (7) Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. 2 Corinthians 9:6-7 (NIV)

Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. 1 Timothy 6:18 (NIV)

T-I-T-H-E

T - Tenth (10%) off the top for God
A tithe of everything ... is holy to the Lord. Leviticus 27:30

I - Investment in God's Kingdom But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven. Matthew 6:20 (NIV)

T - Test of our faith
"Test Me in this," says the Lord Almighty Malachi 3:10

H - Habit for spiritual growth
Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will
enlarge the harvest of your righteousness. 2 Corinthians 9:10 (NIV)

E - Exhibition of our love
But just as you excel in everything in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in your love for us see
that you also excel in this grace of giving. 2 Corinthians 8:7 (NIV)

I have never met a Spirit-filled, committed, dynamic Christian who was still arguing about whether to give God ten percent of his income. ~ Dr. Charles Stanley

Back To The Basics

The Four Azimuths of The Compass:
(A direction set on a fixed position, in this case Christ)

• (North) Believing firmly in the power of prayer. (Ephesians 6:18)

Whatever you believe about the book of Acts, it is certainly clear that the early church was a supernatural church. There were no seminars on "if you do A+B you will get C." We should believe that God's kind of church is a supernatural church. It is a place where things are happening that are not humanly explainable. We are not talking about bizarre or unbiblical manifestations—just dramatic conversions, physical and emotional healing, and direct answers to specific prayers. You know, real miracles.

Many times our minds say, "I can't do it without Him." Yet our day planners indicate that we are trying to go it alone. Only when we get on our knees and get desperate for God does our true need for Him become more than intellectual assent. From day one The Compass will know that the most consistent barometer of God's blessing upon our fellowship will be our willingness to "pray the price." By that we do not mean that God does the work we desire when a certain amount of prayer has been prayed. Rather, God does His deepest works when His people are spiritually fit to receive them. Prayer is preparation for that work. Nowhere does Satan attack the church more than when it begins to pray. Early morning prayer meetings, all night prayer meetings, small group prayer, 24 hour prayer vigils, weeks of prayer, months of prayer, and more —all of this we will do and must increas¬ingly do because we will believe firmly in the power of prayer. What we are after is God informing us about what needs to be done in the world and not us informing God about what He needs to be doing in the world.

This is why we continue to study prayer and in fact why we are making sure the basics are covered. At our launch team meeting on Sunday afternoon we looked at what scripture had to say about where to pray, when to pray, how to pray and what to pray.

Where to Pray

In your private room or secret place

But you, when you pray, enter into your room. And shutting your door, pray to your Father in secret; and your Father who sees in secret shall reward you openly. Mat 6:6

We noted that God’s Word talks about going into your prayer closet. A clear understand of close was shared. A closet in the times of Kings was not a closet, as we know it. It was a room that people were invite into by the king to do the kings business. When we going into our prayer closet it is to do our Kings business. It was a place that a community of people gathered. Prayer is both a private and public activity.

In church

My foot stands in an even place; in the congregations I will bless the LORD. Psa 26:12

And Solomon stood before the altar of the LORD in the presence of all the congregation of Israel, and spread forth his hands toward the heavens. 1Ki 8:22

Everywhere and anywhere

Therefore, I desire that men pray everywhere, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting. 1Ti 2:8

If you look at the all the verses around the above text you get a clear understanding that praying for those in leadership is very important and requires discipline.

When to Pray

In the morning

My voice You shall hear in the morning, O LORD; in the morning I will direct my prayer to You, and I will look up. Psa 5:3

Morning, noon, and night

Evening and morning, and at noon, I will pray and cry aloud; and He shall hear my voice. Psa 55:17

Day & night

O LORD God of my salvation, I have cried day and night before You. Psa 88.1

Every day of the week

Be merciful to me, O Lord; for I cry to You daily. Psa 86:3

Do you get it? God is "on duty" to hear YOUR prayers 24/7/365! You will NOT be put on hold.

Then Jesus spoke a parable to them that men always ought to pray and not lose heart Luke 18:1

We noted that if we are in right relationship with God, God stands ready to act on our behalf. This is not about God being our butler. It is about God being ready to do His will in us and through us.

How to Pray

Pray boldly

Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Heb 4:16 [for an example of bold prayer, see Gen 18.22-25]

Pray with an attitude of deep love and respect for God

Then I proclaimed a fast there at the river of Ahava, that we might humble ourselves before our God, to seek from Him the right way for us and our little ones and all our possessions. Ezr 8:21

Pray "conversationally."

God is a person -- namely, your Father. Prayer is a deeply personal, intimate CONVERSATION with your Father -- not some *magical incantation* or religious babbling.

And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words. Mt 6:7

What to Pray

In "the Model Prayer," Jesus taught you to...
Pray to the Father.
Acknowledge God's holiness.
Seek God's kingdom and God's will.
Request God's daily provision.
Confess your sins, and seek forgiveness.
Request strength to resist evil and temptation.
Offer praises unto God.

(Jesus taught you...) After this manner therefore pray ye...
Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. Mt 6.9-13

Share your sorrows and joys with God.

Is any among you suffering? Let him pray. Is any cheerful? Let him sing praise. Jam 5.13

Pray for spiritual and physical healing for yourself and others.

Pray for one another, that you may be healed. Jam 5.16b

Pray for those who govern your nation and the world, that we may live in peace and godliness.

(Pray...) for kings and all that are in high place; that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and gravity. 1 Tim 2.2

Pray for wisdom and discernment.

If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. Jam 1.5 (see also 1 Kings 3.5-14)

Pray for your enemies.

(Jesus said...) I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you Mt 5.44

Pray for all your needs. Give thanks always unto God. Seek and receive God's peace that surpasses all understanding.

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Philipp 4.6-7

I pray that this posting is a blessing as you continue to seek after God's heart.

Fresh Wind, Fresh Fire

At our Core Team meeting last night we began to talk about the Jim Cymbala (Pastor of the Brooklyn Tabernacle) book Fresh Wind, Fresh Fire. The team has been asked to read the book over the next few weeks. Some people will be reading this book for the second or third time. I felt that it was important for us to read this together and see how it may speak into the planting of The Compass.

This is a continuation of what I said in the last blog. If we are going to be a church that stands on prayer, which is one our core pillars (Ephesians 6:18), we are called by the Word of God to pray at all times in the Spirit keeping alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints.

Our conversation kept us in the first two chapters. We first understood that this is not a book about how to pray but a book on how he (Pastor Cymbala) committed to a life of prayer for the ministry that had been given to him.

I believe that one of the greatest points of the book is found in the first chapter. Here’s the quote, “I discovered an astonishing truth: God is attracted to weakness. He can’t resist those who humbly and honestly admit how desperately they need him.” Did you catch the truth? As God’s people we need to understand that we need God’s hand on us to succeed. Not my hand as pastor, not the hand of those that would lead worship, run children’s ministries, work with young people, be board members for Phase II life, handle the finances or the many that would sit in the seats on Sunday morning. We need God’s hand on us.

We must also live our lives despairing at the thought that our lives might slip by without seeing God show Himself mightily on our behalf. This means staying in prayer at all times in the spirit. We should want a ministry that goes beyond reading about the power of God’s Word and Spirit to a ministry that is seeing the power of God’s Word and Spirit at work. Lets hunger (as stated by Pastor Cymbala) for God to break through in our lives and ministry.

The second chapter opens with this statement, “From this day on, the prayer meeting will be the barometer of the church. What happens on Tuesday night will be the gauge by which we will judge success or failure because that will be the measure by which God blesses us.” I have personally taken this as a challenge. People will come to Sunday morning worship, but would they give up another evening to come before God in prayer to cry out for His help? We (the church) have forgotten that we are called to gather together in prayer. When we gather in prayer as one body God seems to move. This is what happened for the early church as they waited on God in prayer. God showed up, His Spirit fell down and the church blew up. If we are going to be a church of unity for the city we need our God to show up, if we are going to be a church that sees lives being transformed, we need God’s Spirit to fall and if The Compass is going to blow up as a church, we need to wait on Him in prayer.

I shared one of my most favorite scriptures with the group last night. Genesis 18:14, which states, “Is anything too hard for the Lord?” This is after Sarah is told that she would have a child. Knowing that she was old and Abraham was even older she began to laugh. Is anything too hard for the Lord? There is so much that needs to happen to see The Compass come into reality you may feel like laughing or crying out of not know how in the world it is all going to come together. So I will leave you with what is a statement of fact and not a question. IS ANYTHING TOO HARD FOR THE LORD!

Please feel free to give me your thoughts and comments on the power of prayer. Our homework is to continue reading Fresh Wind, Fresh Fire as we drive this truth deep into our foundation.

Peace, Pastor T

The Energy of Prayer

At Our Core team meeting last night we centered our time around prayer. At The Compass we believe prayer to be at the top of the list of importance. In fact it is one of our four Azimuths: an azimuth is a direction set on a fixed position - Our azimuth is CHRIST. To the north is kneeling in prayer. We discovered that Paul calls us to hold up prayer in some very specific ways.

Prayer is the energy that enables the Christian to wear the armor and wield the sword. We cannot fight the battle in our own power, no matter how strong or talented we may think we are. When Amalek attacked Israel, Moses went to the mountaintop to pray, while Joshua used the sword to fight in the valley (Ex 17:8-16). It took both to defeat Amalek-Moses' prayer intercession on the mountain, and Joshua's use of the sword inbattle that was taking place in the valley. Prayer is the power for victory, but not just any kind of prayer. Paul tells how to pray if we would defeat Satan.

Pray always. Do not miss ubderstand me this does not mean "always saying prayers." God does not hear our prayers for our "much words" (Matt 6:7). "Pray without ceasing" (1 Thess 5:17) says to us, "Always be in communion with the Lord. Keep the receiver off the hook!" Never have to say when you pray, "Lord, we come into Thy presence," because you never left His presence! A Christian must "pray always" because he/she is always subject to temptations and attacks of the devil. A surprise attack has defeated more than one believer who forgot to "pray without ceasing."

Pray with all prayer. There is more than one kind of praying: supplication, intercession, thanksgiving (Phil 4:6; 1 Tim 2:1). The believer who prays only to ask for things is missing out on blessings that come with intercessions and giving of thanks. In fact, thanksgiving is a great prayer weapon for defeating Satan. "Praise changes things" as much as "prayer changes things." Intercession for others can bring victory to our own lives. "And the Lord turned the captivity of Job when he prayed for his friends" (Job 42:10).

Pray in the Spirit. The Bible formula is that we pray to the Father, through the Son, and in the Spirit. Rom 8:26-27 tells us that only in the Spirit's power can we pray in the will of God. Otherwise, our praying could be selfish and out of the will of God. In the Old Testament tabernacle, there was a small golden altar standing before the veil, and here the priest burned the incense. The incense is a picture of prayer. It had to be mixed according to God's plan and could not be counterfeited by man. The fire on the altar is a picture of the Holy Spirit, for it is He who takes our prayers and "ignites" them in the will of God. It is possible to pray fervently in the flesh and never get through to God. It is also possible to pray quietly in the Spirit and see God's hand do great things.

Pray with your eyes open. Watching means "keeping on the alert." The phrase "watch and pray" occurs often in the Bible. When Nehemiah was repairing the walls of Jerusalem, and the enemy was trying to stop the work, Nehemiah defeated the enemy by watching and praying. "Nevertheless we made our prayer unto our God, and set a watch" (Neh 4:9). "Watch and pray" is the secret of victory over the world (Mark 13:33), the flesh (Mark 14:38), and the devil (Eph 6:18). Peter went to sleep when he should have been praying, and the result was victory for Satan. God expects us to use our God-given senses, led by the Spirit, so that we detect Satan when he is beginning to work.

Keep on praying. The word perseverance simply means "to stick to it and do not quit" or P.U.S.H. (pray until something happens). The early believers prayed this way (Acts 1:14; 2:42; 6:4); and we also should pray this way (Rom 12:12). Perseverance in prayer does not mean we are trying to twist God's arm, but rather that we are deeply concerned and burdened and cannot rest until we get God's answer. Most of us quit praying just before God is about to give the victory. Not everybody is so constituted that he/she can sincerely spend a whole night in prayer, but all of us can persevere in prayer far more then we do. The early church prayed without ceasing when Peter was in prison and, at the last moment, God gave them their answer (Acts 12:1-19). Keep on praying until the Spirit stops you or the Father answers you. Just about the time you feel like quitting, God will give the answer.

Pray for all the saints. The Lord's Prayer begins with "Our Father" - not "My Father." We pray as part of a great family that is also talking to God, and we ought to pray for the other members of the family. Even Paul asked for the prayer support of the Ephesians - and he had been to the third heaven and back. If Paul needed the prayers of the saints, how much more do you and I need them! If my prayers help another believer defeat Satan, then that victory will help me too. Note that Paul did not ask them to pray for his comfort or safety, but for the effectiveness of his witness and ministry.

As we understand the importance of prayer to the life of the believer more time is needed to grow in our understanding of prayer. I have asked that we all read the book Fresh Wind, Fresh Fire by Jim Cymbala. Please read as much as you can by our next core team meet that is August 19th. We will sent our time talking about how this book relates to our ministry together.

As always if you have any thoughts or comments please leave it below.

Liberty Is At Hand for All

At our Core Team meeting on Sunday I shared a bit about one of our core foundational scriptures. We desire to be about what Jesus was about, setting people free and II Corinthians 3:17-18 is the scripture that holds up all that we want to do with the ministry of The Compass. As we consider offering people freedom in Christ I thought that it would be good for us to have a clear understanding of some of the things that we are freed from.

Verse 17

There is liberty ...
When a person becomes a Christian, receiving the Holy Spirit as an earnest of redemption, there is given at the same time freedom:

(1) Freedom from the law (Galatians 4:18);

Cross-references:
2 Chronicles 13:9; Isaiah 37:19; Jeremiah 2:11; 1 Corinthians 8:4; 10:20

(2) Freedom from fear (Romans 8:13);

Cross-references:
Philippians 2:7; Hebrews 2:14,17; 4:15; Luke 1:6; Romans 2:26

(3) Freedom from the law of sin and death (Romans 8:2)

Cross-references:
Romans 7:20; John 3:6; Romans 7:25; 8:3; Romans 7:15

(4) Freedom from sin (Romans 6:18)

Cross-reference:
Revelation 1:18

(5) Freedom from corruption (Romans 8:21).

Cross-reference:
Galatians 5:18

Verse 18

But we all with unveiled face beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are transformed into the same image from glory to glory, even as from the Lord the Spirit.

Unveiled face ...
All Christians, not just one man, as in the case of Moses, behold the glory of the Lord; and no veil is required (we noted that this veil is one that we put on). This has a transforming effect on all who do it (behold the glory of the Lord). It is in the looking of the believer upon the Lord, as invariably entailed in the worship of him, that a miracle of transformation is wrought in his life. Here Paul revealed the secret of how to "be ... transformed" (Romans 12:2).

Beholding as in a mirror ...
The word "beholding" in classical Greek means "looking at one's self in a mirror"; "But that requires steady looking when mirrors are metal, and so the word came to mean simply, to gaze steadily.”

From the Lord the Spirit ...
"Now Jesus is that Spirit, or new covenant of which I have been speaking II Corinthians 3:3, 6, 8; and where that new covenant is, there is liberty, especially the liberty of seeing (without a veil). We should understand that what the believer beholds is the manifestation of Christ's glory which is made in His word and by His Spirit, whose office is to glorify Christ by revealing Him to us.”

We all ...
The notion has persisted in history that only certain special persons could be transformed in Christ; It is evident that Paul is speaking of an experience that is common to all believers. Under the old covenant, only the face of Moses shone; only the high priest went into the Holy of Holies; only the priests might serve at the altar, etc., etc. But in the glorious new covenant, "All who are Christ's, whether great or small, whether known or unknown, have this blessed privilege of beholding and being transformed."

As you reflect on the study of 2 Corinthians please feel free to share any of your thoughts in the comment box below. Here is some homework for you.

1) Continue to hold this scripture up in prayer.
2) Pray for the place that God would have us minister from.
3) Prayer and invite to our next informational gathering on July 27th @ 7: 00 PM.

Peace, Pastor T.
